I'm reading At Home on an Unruly Planet right now, which is about how climate change, specifically global warming is changing our sense of home. The loss of tradition and place that is so much more than possession of a house.
As a result of so many things--fires, floods, turbulent storms--many are losing both their physical homes and their sense of place. The positive side the book extols is the many people, like you and Ricky and your Highland Community, who are the face of resilience. The kind of adaptation and community building that will be called on more and more in the future. Don't castigate yourself for the very human concern of being approached and wondering if the reason is a negative one. You have proven yourself, over and over, to be the kind of person necessary for facing our future in the face of changes that are coming faster than expected.

You do the best you can and more than most of us are willing to do. jenclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06046532245054911248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727843531028515444.post-85218144928014158392021-09-16T12:24:55.011-05:002021-09-16T12:24:55.011-05:00Hello Teresa. My sisters and I talk about it now. It sounds like she might be callous but it was nothing like that. I just mean she would look around her small town and see somewhat who might want to do some of the things she liked doing and would call them. She also would reach out to newcomers to town or church. My youngest sister, the pragmatist, says make sure you have friends of all ages. We cut a couple of the roses before the rain beat them up last night. Our flowers are like like oases in the yard, the bright spots, because our outdoor space isn't well-designed and executed like your little garden is. We still have a lot of pruning to do on parts of shrubs and trees that died from the cold, e.g., azaleas and camellias. All the difference in the world. You summarized the unaccustomed traumas related to the freeze and lack of water in such vivid and personal ways. You and Ricky did such an outstanding job during the water crisis, but you are both always involved in community projects, and your neighbors are no doubt in awe of your commitment. I wish the city would involve itself more in preserving the Highland; it such a shame to allow the deterioration of the historic area. Of course, the Great Pyrenees story is a highlight to conclude your post. So glad they have been rehomed!

See--breaking news vs detailed personal essays. I understand that as I age, I will experience more loss, which is sad, but it's also an occasion to express gratitude that some peoples' lives and mine intersected.
